Assignment 2 - Cover Arrangement

Marvin Gaye - Charlie Puth and Meghan Trainor

For Assignment 2, I created a cover of "Marvin Gaye" by Charlie Puth and Meghan Trainor using the flute, a synth keyboard and a bass guitar. I recorded using myself playing the melody and harmony on flute and the bass guitar using an iPhone and inputed the synth piano and edited using GarageBand on my macbook.

Here is the final recording of my performance

I chose to create a cover arrangement of "Marvin Gaye" by Charlie Puth and featuring Meghan Trainor because I was really fascinated by the different tone colours that Meghan Trainor's voice could take and I already knew and liked the song very much. I chose to feature my arrangement around the concepts structure and tone colour because I felt that the piece could use an instrumental, bass boosted version. I also tried to explore pitch as I raised to octave for the melody so it would be easier for the flute to play.

The main changes in my arrangement included a change in instrumentation and structure, and both of these helped make the arrangement shorter and have a different tone colour to the original piece. The original version has 2 vocalist (male and female) and a piano accompaniment. In my arrangement, I used the flute to replace the two vocalists, a piano synth and a bass guitar. As a result, this changed the tone colour significantly,

My performance was recorded in GarageBand and I inputed the synth keyboard manually after notating the score on NoteFlight. Then I multi-tracked each individual layer directly into GarageBand.

I used an amp for the bass guitar, using and iPhone to record for both the bass and the flute. I messed around with the settings on GarageBand to try get a nicer, rounder sound for my flute, adding some reverb, and I did that for the bass as well to make it slightly louder. Then I adjusted the track volumes so nothing was drowned out.
