Progress Diary - Rock Music Performance

Week 3

We came up with a list of songs that we liked and roughly sorted out the instruments we were going to play.

The songs included:

- Under Pressure

- You Give Love a Bad Name

- Mr Brightside

- Fast Car

- Hold Back the River

- We are the Champions

- Go Your Own Way

Week 4

This week, we tried to choose the song we wanted to do. We wanted to do Fast Car as it is a mellow song and one that everyone had heard, however, Miss told us that it would be very boring as it's very repetitive. We then had two options left, Go Your Own Way or Under Pressure. Then we confirmed and made official what instrument each person would be playing:

Sienna - Flute

Brayton & Lachlan W - Guitar

Lachlan Z - Bass guitar

Kirra & Frankie - Vocals

We made a discord server and talked in there, we decided that we would do Under Pressure

Week 5

In week 5 we determined the structure of the song and managed to play through from the start to the first chorus. We had difficulty hearing each other playing and Frankie singing (as she has a soft voice and) as the other group was quite loud. Not to mention that because of COVID, there was a limit on how many singers and wind instruments that were allowed to be playing/singing at one time, thus we had to have only one singer and the rest of us had to play non-wind instruments. We nominated Frankie to sing as Kirra had some difficulty singing the song, and I had to play bass. Instead of both Lachlan Z and myself playing the riff, I went chordal bass and Lachlan played the riff.

Week 7

There was no prac at all in week 6. As the other group was fast in finishing their cover, the room was relatively quiet. We all had some difficulty hearing Frankie and was suggested that she use a mic. We changed up the structure again and nearly managed to play all the way to the end. Frankie said that she had difficulty singing the scatting parts so we decided to cut that out, and certain parts of the song have Freddy Mercury's ridiculously high parts, which were too high,

Week 8

This week, when we had prac lessons, it was just us practising; the other group had already finished. I really feel that we have come a long way and am very proud of us. We managed to figure out an ending, which was the riff twice then an A chord and a D chord while Frankie sings "under pressure" in time. It was nearly perfect on Monday, so we had to come in on Tuesday lunch. Unfortunately, some people forgot about it, and we had to track them down, which lost us the first half. However, we managed to get the whole song perfect. We just had to hope that we would remember for Monday when we would record.

Week 9

On Monday morning, we had an assembly, which drew away from out rehearsal time, however, we still were able to fit in 2 rehearsals and 3 recordings. In our first recording, we were all very stiff and the song didn't have much life to it, it was very dull and boring. Our second time was much better, we were more animated and the song became more lively. Our last recording was a novelty, just for jokes, but it was our best one as we were comfortable thanks to the other group helping us to loosen up by coming into our video as backup dancers. We recorded just in time!
